The Art of Just Listening
At first, I thought she was some kind of a mute, Today I went to my friend's college. He had an exam, so he just called me to give him a company there. It was a little bit away from our home. I thought it's better to change the environment. We reached very early at the college, the exam was to start at about 2 PM in the afternoon. We reached there at almost at about 12.
We headed straight to the exam hall to find a place to sit. Due to the COVID situation we thought it's better to stay inside there, I thought that I could stay there until the exam begins. I noticed her from the first moment I entered the exam hall, there were only a few students at that hall and she was the only one who wasn't reading any textbook or any last-minute guides.
She was just sitting there calmly. Everyone was wearing masks, so it's just the eyes. They can talk a lot, her eyes were following each one coming to the hall. After checking each seat numbers my friend found at his seat, it was next to her's. Then he sat next to her and I also accompanied him.
Then he also started studying like everyone else in the class, now it was just me and her who had nothing to do. Usually, there are only two types of people who will be staying like her just before the exams. The one who knows everything and the one's who knew nothing. For a few minutes, I stayed there silently, checking on my phone. After a few minutes, I got bored.
I was planning to start a conversation with her, I just felt like something wasn't right about her. Then it was my friend who broke the silence, he asked about the questions and she was just normally answering to that.
There wasn't anything mysterious. She replied like she doesn't care about the exam and all that. Then he just turned into his own works. I considered that as an opportunity to talk, So I just asked her about why she does not care about the exams. She hesitated to answer that question. I knew that she was getting uncomfortable, So I just deviated the subject to where she was coming from and all those basic questions.
Then after talking for a few minutes, she told me the reason for her sadness. It was her boyfriend. She loved him very much and she even talked about him to her parents. So both of the families were ready for their marriage. But at this last moment, he said that he wanted to break up. It was a lot to bear for her. She wasn't even expecting that for a bit.
After that I don't have to say something, she was just telling me the whole story. I just listened, I felt like she was just waiting for someone talk about her life. Then in the middle, she said that these exams didn't make any sense in her life. For her life is empty and there are no more desires.
In my mind, I wanted to say to her that it was just a small event and it didn't matter. This time will also pass and she can become normal like before.
I said nothing, She may even know that, and it's just easy to say these words from my position. So I just stood silent and listened to all her story. That was also what she was expecting, not some cliche motivation which anyone can give her.
I tried to mock my friend to make her smile a bit, but it didn't happen. Suddenly the invigilator came, So I left the classroom and waited outside for him to complete the exam. When I left the hall I just looked at her once more and nodded.
I waited outside for him, it was a 3-hour exam. So I put my earphone and streamed some series om Netflix and listened to music. When the time just passed 2 hours, I saw her coming outside of the hall. She saw me and came to me. As usual, I asked her about the exam.
She said it was hard and she didn't know anything. Then she was going to leave and I just smiled at her before she was leaving. When she reached the gate of the college, she looked back once more and walked away. I think she was smiling, the mask was there but you can tell a lot from the eyes.
